East West University

Madison Construction has completed a new 17-story, cast-in-place Student Life Center for East-West University. East-West University was founded in 1980 with a mission to provide quality, affordable, multi-cultural and forward looking higher education and is located in the South Loop of Chicago.

The lower floors of the building are comprised of the academic and extracurricular functions of the program – lobby and retail shops, student wellness center, library and resource center, and labs and offices. Each of these floors wrap around and through a “vertical quad” that connects to the main street entry and to the third floor skywalk that serves all three of East-West’s buildings occupying the city block. The upper 10 floors are reserved for housing, where floors taper and narrow towards the eastern ally. The units themselves are placed along this taper, with service functions pushed along the property line to the south. This affords each unit an eastfacing view, which looks out over East-West’s other, lower buildings toward Michigan Avenue and the lakefront. This solution simultaneously obviates the problem of blocked windows/views should a taller building occupy the currently vacant lot to the south. Common spaces are located on the west, overlooking the street and taking advantage of views back toward the Loop. The top floor is dedicated to a lounge, board room and terrace.
